So, outside of my Otake wig being <i>crooked</i> ::face palm:: when I put it on all went well with that costume. Have to give the roommate major props for wrangling me into my obi; apparently not as easy as I assumed it would be. Ironically got NO pictures taken of me by anyone not in my group, it was quite odd, but oh well. But that's okay, next con is about three weeks out, and those costumes are all done and I just have to figure out which three I'm actually taking.

Working on redoing WFCatherine's top, it was a bit misfitted last time, and this time I'd like to not have to be always pulling it up. Really all I have left is to trim the top, attach ribbons and decorate like a bedazzling idiot. Heh, bedazzled. Then after that I'm making Aurora's crown for Katchan, Yaichi and Undertaker for Fanime. Go meeeeeeeee.

In other news, yes, I'm grateful I've got lots of commission, but I swear, the next one that bitches I've nto 'asked for any information' after I've TOLD THEM I won't ask for it until April I will bitch-slap them. Hard. OH, and may have 1-3 more commissions once May ends, muahahahah!

I apparently suck at Momware(traditional japanese hairstyle). A lot. I now get to take it all down, put more fiber into it and try again. Did I mention the first try took six hours? Yeah, it did. The upside is that like Marlena's wig I'll spray it down with water as I fix it to unfix the hairspray which makes redoing it easier in a way. Downside is we're going to be fostering a shiba coming monday which means I may not get a lot done with a dog in the house. It's not yet warm enough to be in the dungeon for long bits of time and I somehow see me ending up being primary caretaker.....

In other news, attempting to cut apart my sandals for Otake today...everyone pray I come back with all my fingers. I asked the roommate to do them over a month ago and nada, so I'm being proactive. In theory all I need to do is cut them the right length, sand the edges, drill three holes and run lacing. I'm screwed.

Uhm. Yeah. Hi. Did I mention I was bad at posting with any regularity? Cause I am.

So, 2010 is done ::kicks that corpse:: and I succeeded in finishing MOST of the costumes I had to do. Serenity didn't happen as the site I use for my boning has been down for over a year.... If they're no longer online I'll kill something. And the person I'm making it for has yet to order the wig extensions. However, I finished all the others including Formal Femme Deadpool and Nightcrawler. I also picked up a last minute character, Otake from House of Five Leaves and got her done except for the wig.

Now into 2011 I've forsworn making any new costumes as I plan to attend Fanime and have to save up for that. I'm already to the point of getting the badge and the plane ticket by the end of this month, so the rest will just be the hotel room and spending money. The good news there is apparently I'm getting slammed with commission work this year. I've already finished three commissions, have three others and we're just in February! So, if this continues I might be able to hit one other out of state con this year. Crossin' digits.

Next on my To Accomplish list is Otake's wig. I'm lace fronting the whole thing, so really would it be Lace edging? It'll be a real challenge for me since it's a traditional Japanese up-do, and I've not done one to date.

After that I have to get my commissions done, one for the end of March, one for Fanime itself. Plus a surprise for said individual. Then we'll be into the summer and I can break the 'not making a new costume' rule. Since I just splurged on 15 yards of material at Denver Fabrics today. But it's okay, commissions will offset the cost. ::glee::

I have never, ever, had such issues with a wig! Kouchou's wig is bound and determined not to exist! I tried dying it and the three(really four) rounds of extensions over the last two days and it failed more miserably than anything I've tried in years! The extensions finally took enough dye to be declared done, but the wig base now refuses to change colors! ::beating my head against a wall:: and to top it off Sakujun's stilts broke today when I did my practice run. Lovely. So, now to finish/fix those, finish Serenity, and fix Sebastian. Lovely, I work well under pressure but this is a gun to my head. Wish me luck.

I passed but I failed...wait, what?

So, I failed on my July challenge/costuming. Serenity is sitting downstairs unfinished. In my defense, not that it won't mean I didn't fail, I have to have Amanda here to fit it for 2 reasons. 1)I think I cut the bodice too high, and need to try it on to see if I can take off some of the height(which will make the spacing of the details nicer) and 2) I purposefully cut the hem too long so I could hem it while it was on her to just skim the ground. Unfortunately this means I'll have to get her in that outfit and work like a mad fiend to get it pinned on Saturday when I have her for a bit. But! I got to sacrifice a million ornaments for her, and it's so fluffy and pretty!

The passing part is I'm already two of three wigs into August. Sakujun I actually did last month and he's hanging around the reading room in his fabulocity. Amy is currently on wig-head awaiting me to style out her pigtails, but she's parted, wefted, pigtailed and banged(that sounds so wrong) already, so she just needs corkscrews! Lastly will be Kouchou, and I'm feeling a bit more confident than I was previously. Hopefully I'll make some progress on that tomorrow.

So, yeah, I passed but I failed! OMG now I wanna watch Real Genius!

So, I've made many an outfit in my day. But HOLY HELL this one may eat me! I'm only a third of the way into it and I've already used 14 yards of fabric. I still have to make a petticoat/tulled underskirt, detail the bodice, pleat in the skirts(there's three of them), hem said skirts, and make sleeves that defy logic and reason. Oh yeah, FYI, doing Queen Serenity from Sailormoon. Amanda you know this proves I love you right? Cause, french-seaming 9+ yards of organza makes me weep.

Steampunk is still missing a hat and belt and front closures and busk and bias tape, but I'm just done with it for now. Yes this means I'm falling behind...HOWEVER, I did tint/style Sakujun's wig, so I'm down a wig for next month. Doesn't make it even, but does make it less.

I'm sorta costuming myself out I think. Next year so not going to kill myself over costumes again. Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight. Who really believed that?

It's Gear Time!

Okay, so, I'm a shoe fiend :: points at icon:: And I neeeeeever get rid of shoes unless they're beyond repair or finally too small(hasn't happened in two decades). So, digging through my shoes I laughed as I encountered shoes I'd bought/used in 9th grade that are PERFECT for my steampunk outfit. I'm painting brass detailing on them, and will probably add other things as well, but they're soooo perfect it's insane. And I didn't even know I still owned them! Doesn't help that I own over 50 pair of shoes, I often forget what I have :).

As for the rest of my outfit. I'm fitting the tailed bodice today, then assembling it. Lastly I'll mock up the hat and make that...and then I just have to wait to have money to make the belt/holster/combo unit! I found a cute set of jewelers lenses that I'll paint, augment and attach to to my glasses and I'm good to go :) I had a mock up of a necklace I wanted made, but now I highly doubt it would be feasible, it's ridiculously detailed. But that's okay, and it means once I'm done in a day or so I can full speed into Amanda's costume so I can stay on time. And OMG, I love the pants I made!!! I usually suck so hard at making them, but these are too cute! And I already put in their button holes too, go me!

Nearly laughed my ass off when my roommate said she understood that we were 'entering crunch time for NDK'. I informed her I'm done outside of wig work for that con, and she nearly smacked me. Woulda be sooooooooo worth it.

I hate pants

Seriously, I can make just about anything else...well...okay, kimono give me a hard time too, but not like PANTS! Argh! Doesn't help that I'm also doing things like making a yoked waistband, gathered and gartered knee breeches as my most recent foray into the dreaded pants, but still. Thankfully, once they're done I can do the bodice and those I do easy peasy rice and cheesey. Then onto belts and a hat and the steampunk'll be done. I have to get Amanda out for a trial fit on Serenity, but if I want to be done on time I need to get it all together and just do alterations. Still scares me btw. I'll take in the artbooks to work tomorrow to draw out the patterns I need to do on the top, then get crack-a-lackin' on her. Save me from my hobbies, seriously.

So, fic from years ago, I write like Davisd Foster Wallace, fic from decades ago I write like William Gibson(awesome, cyberpunk...wait, steampunk please?) and current fic I write like Leo Tolstoy...oh snap, my TB ficlets are like War and Peace??! So, at first I figured money would be my enemy this month. I would have to get all this fabric, which I wasn't budgeted for, but no, I found everything I needed in the dungeon. Then I thought boning would do me in, but no, I can get i locally. Then I realized what would do me in...the stupid busk. The place I normally order from is completely off-line right now, and I don't have another supplier I've used and trusted. That's the kicker, I could find another supplier, but I don't trust easily, and I've used my current one for nearly a decade now.

However, there's at least progress. I've got my corset cut out, ready for assembly. I've all the fabric for the Steampunk set except the belt materials, but that's not the hard part. I need to draft up the hat, pants and bodice, but can't do two of the three until the corset is done and on so I can take measurements. Amanda's is in the drafting stage, but I have all the material...and more extra organza I've no idea what I was doing with. So this month's goals may take me down, but I'm determined! And if all else fails I'll do wigwork, bleh.

Too lazy to make a new post. So, corset is as done as it can be ATM, need a busk and need to decide on the color of the binding for the top, but can't put that on until the busk is in. However, it's assembled enough to allow for fittings and measurements. In light of that I've drafted up the pants...god how I hate making pants...and have them cut out and ready for assembly tomorrow. Assuming that works out the bodice shall be drafted shortly thereafter and I shall get cracking on that. I'm torn as to whether or not I want to do a jacket with this outfit. Part of me says HELL YES ANOTHER MINIJACKET!! and yet another part says MOAR WORK??! So we shall see. Which reminds me, I need to find a place to get the closures I want for the bodice, I believe they're sold more for purse clasps, but I think they'd be smashing front hooks as well....

Another Costume Down

Okay, as of right now I have to finish tacking down the back strap, and put in eyelets for Amy and she's done! I'll go down and make up a set of tabi later, but I've got those pinned together and ready to go. Really all I'll have left is to epoxy on the skulls...and do the things that aren't really official for the costume. Whoot, go me.

Up next I've decided to work on my Steampunk and Amanda's Queen Serenity. So, once again, lots of corsetry and floofyness. I'm gonna do wig work as I have time and then all of August. And if I don't get the wigs done, well honorable suicide is an option.

Edited for win status: Done, hung up even, go me. Will start pattern drafting tomorrow when I get home from work, whoot.

No, not bruises..well..wait...those too.... But Amy is nearly done, I've about twelve feet(not really, but hyperbole helps) of bias trim to sew down by hand, two buckles and corresponding eyelets to put on, and the butt bow. I've just realized that lately I have a lot of butt bows. Hmm, my ass apparently likes decoration. Oh well. Even with giving up this weekend for FUN I should be done by next Thursday! Whoot! Go me.

Is it bad I find it very suspicious when my roommate compliments my work? Makes me wonder 1)what she wants and 2)what's wrong with it. I are very suspicious person.

Small Steps Forward

Okay, so need to grommet, once grommeting done need to lace and set up buckle locations and eyelets for lacing. Attach the back strap/s/buckle. Hand sew a shit ton of satin ribbon down. Tack the core of the corset to the outer shell. Hope to whatever deity I can think of it still fits in the end. Decide if I'm sticking with the shoes I have or moving on and getting the hell on those.

Swear to Dog I'm a Moron

So, got the dremmel up and going, got my lengths of boning ground down. I'm awesome right? Not quite, managed to FUBAR to things that told me to just put Amy down and walk away. One, went to all the trouble of carefully measuring and pinning on the lace...only to hack it three inches too short. Solution? Bang head repeatedly on the wall, rip off the lace and reapply it when not a moron. Two, while getting the dremmel set up I let the skirt brush against the machine...which low and behold was storing a lovely globule of oil just waiting for such a moment! So now I have a sewing machine oil stain riiiiiiiiiiiight on my ass. Lovely. I shall be testing a few stain removal options on some scrap tomorrow, wish me luck.

However, even with these setbacks I'm nearly done with her outfit. I've finished the sleeves, garters, all the components of her necklace and gotten her dress/top fully pinned together. Next I shall sew the top pieces together, reapply the lace, and hopefully get the stain out prior to hemming the light purple layer. Which had I been smart I should have French seamed that sucker. Oh well, live and learn and do shit the hard way. But yay for being on schedule!

Things are going, and going...

So, I'm about 65 percent of the way done with Amy. Why would I be displeased with this sort of thing? Cause of two things. One, I need a metal griding head for the dremmel and the roommate is acting like an idiot when I ask for it. Two, every time I find the mold forms for the things I need cast it gets 'relocated'. Three, I used one dye bath for four types of lace and ended up with four colors. Are any one of these things going to stop me from finishing by the end of the month? Hell no. I will stay on schedule even if it kills her.

Beyond that, uhm, I do not look forward to the month of wigging(August), cause it's gonna kill me. One wig to center part and put into pigtails. One wig to dye along with hand making wefts for it, lacefront and do an updo. One wig to tint...which wouldn't be bad if it didn't reach my hips. In theory one wig to create, assuming I can get the fabric for it. Ugh. I need a monkey to make wigs for me.

Stuff and more stuff

So, eight days ago I lost my furry man to kidney failure...and yes I know that has nothing to do with costuming to which I've decided this journal is for.... But, he was my baby and he deserves to cross post to any and all aspects of my life. I won't hash it out in this area, but I needed to include it.

I've been a wigging fool of late, and have completed two of the three wigs I planned to have done this month. The third is going to kill me as it shall require the creation of wefts, and I am pretty sure that's outside my skill set. However, within my skill set I've drafted all of Amy Sorel's patterns now, so I just have to assemble her. And dye her lace and get the RIGHT color ribbon for her. So, assuming I actually do something costuming related on my two days off this coming week I should have her done lickety split. All that's left on the other costumes for this month are the creation of tabi socks, and well...it's socks. If I get really lazy I can just augment existing socks and say to hell with it.

So yes, I'm staying on track dammit, no matter what life throws at me. BTW, baby silk material? Not made of babies, nor does it stain if you cry on it. This is all.

And She's Done!

Well, outside of a strip of velcro, a hook and a wig she's done. Enough that I can consider myself only ONE DAY over my alloted time to finish Kouchou and Sakujun! I sorta giggle at the overlapping fabric use betwixt the two of them, but :: does a happy dance:: I can say they're done enough to wear right now! Well, once I go down and hem Sakujun they'll be done, but hemming takes motivation and ten minutes, so I figure I"ll have that done by the end of the day no problem-o!

Next on the list...::whips out a huge list:: shall be finishing off the Bleach Girls. So that would be one hair bun, one Kosode, one set of Tabi, and two wigs. Also Amy Sorel from SCIII. Sadly, I'll have to redo the underskirt I already made for her for two reasons; 1)it's ugly and 2) I can't fit into it anymore. Two very good reasons, but suckily taking me back to square one on her. The good news is that if I stay on task with two costumes a month I'll have the following left between now and September:

Which if you divide into two per month minimum I'll be done just after my deadline...which I think I can find acceptable since I had 22 at the start of the year, added in three more, took three off(so really maintained stasis). So, come October 1 I will have 22 brand spankin' new costumes for myself and friends from this year. Next year I'm retaining my sanity and just doing three. Three really complex/big things, but just three!

Which reminds me, I seriously need help finding dove grey wool...feel free to help a costumer out folks.

Even when I insist on doing things the hard way and bass ackwards. Sakujun is pretty much done. Some hemming, and finishing his belt and I can call him set to go. Kouchou is my target Thursday(can't say tomorrow as I'm pretty sure I've hit midnight), so we'll see if I can kill myself to get her mostly done. She can't be completely done until Amanda comes to get fitted, but I can do everything except the final stuff. And, if I'm lucky and productive, that will keep me on track for the Two Costumes a Month goal. And if I do that, I will indeed be done by the end of my year. Go me. Now I go sleep.

So, I've spent the last few days getting patterns up for Sakujun. I realized after finishing it that I've used the wrong material for his one sleeve, but that's easily rectified...now if only I could recall why I had the other fabric in the first place.... I realize now the purple I'm using was supposed to go towards my brother's Joker costume...you'll forgive me if I'm not sad I'm misappropriating it. If my luck and work ethic holds I'll have him mostly together by the end of this month. Next to finish is Kouchou...she's about at the fifty percent point, so I should be able to kick it into gear this coming week and have her mostly done(sans wig) as well.

Speaking of wigs, I'm seriously intimidated by them of late. I have five to get styled/created/colored/etc and I'm putting them all off. I need to work on my wig-phobia ::makes note to look up the clinical word for that:: One will be easy; Sakujun just needs to be tinted, so all I need is a rediculous amount of alcohol and markers. One needs to be put into an updo and bangs cut...this shall be avoided as cutting wigs scares me more than most. One needs to have wefts created, then dyed, then assembled, then styled...this is only slightly more terrifying than the one I have to create a back part on, add extensions, make curls and cut bangs. I have a problem and need help. Or a professional stylist.

Beyond all of the above I've made little to no progress on anything else, someone breakout the whip and chair so I'm done on time this year!

So, thus far I've used this journal as a dumping ground for all things. While that's fine I'm not sure if I want this much of myself, ever, online. So, i have decided to turn this into a costuming journal, with maybe some character related fan fiction thrown in for good measure. I'll remove or lock anything not really related to that thus far posted, and from here on out that's all that will be put on this space. I know this post is, in essence, pointless as no one perse watches me here, but it's more for my own edification. Happy trails folks, see you on the next length of fabric.

Costuming for the Win!

Damn, I love days I feel really productive. Yesterday I started and FINISHED adorable Yachiru's costume. I'm just waiting on getting the right wheels for her sword and it's done! Now if I can keep this motivation through today I can holler from the rooftops that I AM A PRODUCTIVE COSTUMER! And if not...well...adorable is still in my house! I think the whole reason was I re-watched Gungrave while doing everything. It took me approximately 10 episodes from start to finish(juban, kosode, and hakama), so that's darn impressive IMO. Aaaaaand, I love that series...really really love that series, and I can see all sorts of things now that I never noticed. One day I may feel motivated to sit down and 'review' all my favorite series. Just cause I can. Once I figure out the stupid break/tag/divide doohickey(can I love that spell check fixes doohickey??).

And, the world will end, but I went to Denver Fabrics and left with ONLY what I went in for! O.o Yes. Nothing extra, nothing not on the list. In fact yesterday I only spent fifty cents on something that wasn't on my list. I rock. Indeed I do.

Now to go work on Sakujun, the color blind redhead... for which I need to now buy a snot ton of markers to tone his wig. Yay rubbing alcohol!

Ew, ew ew ew ewwwwwwww. I think this is the beginning of biological warfare. Fish and lilacs on the same evening? And they've abandoned ship too. Swear to god, I will nuke their world when I think of something suitable. And if I wasn't starving I wouldn't bother to go down and brave the horrid smells, but i neeeeeeeeed food.

And had to verify with Adorable Yachiru's mom that I was allowed to give her nine year old a sword. The mom is okay with it, which I think makes me love that family all the more. Is it wrong I now want to put mom into Captain Mom? Cause, it would be awesome. Awesome. And I want to drag them both into TB stuff, but I can't decide.

Elitism: You're Doing it Wrong and Fanfiction

First off have to NOT howl with laughter as I watch something come together in my house. The intent is for it to be amazing and awesome and SO PERFECT YOUR EYES WILL BLEED! The results can be summed up in the statement(which needs to be made into a demotivational poster) Elitism: You're Doing it Wrong. But hey, I know what I do isn't the bees knees, so I'm trying not to say anything. Really. It's killing me.

Up next, on a slightly more fail-worthy note. I just realized I can post fan fiction here. Oh dear god. I've got so much hidden on my computer that I've not been willing to fling onto an official fan fiction site. I may have to spam the journals with it. Right now since literally no one knows I'm here I'll be safe...for a while...maybe.... We shall see. If I do it shall be a bizarre mix of Trinity Blood, Marvel, and other non-crossedover fandoms of mine. Though, with the recent OMG FanFiction is Ebil! I've seen going on from authors I'm a bit hesitant. Not cause I agree or give credence to the stupidity of that statement, but because I don't want to be seen purposefully jabbing a stick into a hornets nest. I may love watching people flail and rant, but I usually like to watch from the shadows.

Okay, off now to hang out with the most adorable Yachiru evers, and give her her lieutenant badge. Her sword is nearly done, just gotta get the ties and wheels on. Adorable I say, adorable.

Or rather stilts and swords. I've gotten permission to kidnap two different people and place them in costumes of my choosing for events of my choosing. The only downside? I get to fund this. Which...considering my tastes, severely limits my options. I've already decided my friends 9 year old shall be the most adorable Yachiru/Mr.T in existence. I'm working on her sword in the dungeon as I type...well...when I'm not typing and actually down there. I've also remade her lieutenant's badge since I painted it all the wrong colors. I need to get her mom to give me measurements so I can get her actual clothing together, and debating commissioning a friend for REAL waraji for her. It would be beyond adorable.... But she's already that without much assistance.

The other person is a previous commissionee. He felt bad for getting payment to me so late he said I had carte blanche to put him in a costume of my choosing. I reeeeeeeeeeeeally want a Professor from TB but dear god the bling. On the upside I'm about on schedule for my costuming this year, so I could fit it in; however, financially, I'm a bit strapped. Oh well, if push comes to shove I'll have anime version this year, upgrade to manga or artbook the next! Though I'm also tempted to make him Kenpachi just so my adorable Yachiru has a buddy....

My stilts work wonderfully! I really should use more than just epoxy to hold them together, but I didn't plan it well enough to have places to put hardware, so it'll have to do. I think as long as I learn how to walk in them, and go SLOW I'll be fine. I shall be the most epically looming bad guy ever. Ever. And since they're done enough to get measurements in I can finally start on drafting his patterns. I'll have to augment the underskirt I started, it'a bout six inches too short, but I can live with that. Shit ton of hemming though since it's a doubled circle skirt. And I'm tempted to make fake shoe fronts for the bottom of my stilts so I have shoes peeking out should I stand just right.

Latest TB novel and manga came out, got more references for the next of my projects from that. Just need money to come in so I can order fabric swatches. I'm torn on colors, but since it's black and white with no mention of colors I can do as I please. At least no mention thus far. We'll see what's going on when the next in the novel series comes out; knowing my luck it'll tell me how wrong I am again. But I can live with it since one in a hundred thousand will know I'm wrong.

And need to think up ideas on how to keep the house clean. I can do it, but the roommate is exploding everywhere. 'parently the dungeon isn't big enough she needs to use alllllll the areas everywhere. TTFN back to the dungeon I go!
